Pressmeddelande -

Appreciated festival DREAM MUSIC back at Malmö Live focusing on light and colours

February 16th 2019 the acclaimed drone music festival Dream Music takes place again at Malmö Live. Dream Music Two in the Kuben at Malmö Live will be a much longed-for event for all of us missing the sun rays in the dreary Malmö winter.

When Malmö Live created DREAM MUSIC it was twelve hours of drone music until the middle of the night. DREAM MUSIC TWO will be something very different. Instead of twelve hours the programme will be six hours, and it will begin early in the morning. The ambition is to fill the visitors with energy through light therapy. As last time, it will be possible to walk in-and-out of the venue during the event.

One of the additions to the new iteration is the focus on color and light. Colour LED-lights will give the audience a much-needed light boost right before the final stretch of winter, when a lot of people struggle with winter depressions.

— When I moved to Sweden I thought I was prepared for winter having the cold and snowy winters in New York in mind. But I was in no way ready for the darkness. I remember importing special lamps from Canada and sitting in front of them for half an hour every day just to cope with it all, Nathan Larson, the festival's curator, concludes.

— We noticed that people came from all over Europe last time, and there is still a huge need for cultural spaces that facilitates reflection and meditative moments, says Anna Storåkers, producer at Malmö Live.

From a musical perspective, the set up is slightly different from last time around - with it’s weight on loud guitars, now replaced by lighter sounds. Among others, Wildbirds and Peacedrums will perform, bringing experimental jazz and ethnic references to the festival.

— Their music is wonderful and a little bit spooky. In general I'd say that the programme is a bit lighter with regards to the character of the music and the feelings we want to give the audience. Another new aspect is that music will come from several different parts of the Kuben venue, and not be fixed to one stage as is the conventional approach on festivals, Larson adds.

Another name joining the line-up is swedish-japanese percussionist Mika Takehara who works a lot with tuned percussion, such as Marimba. Nathan Larson himself will join in with his own Subchamber Ensmble - The ensemble involves a rotating roster of classically trained musicians in the area that are active, but might not directly be connected to the conventional orchestral platforms. Inspired by the enigmatic composer La Monte Young and his minimalistic musical explorations as well as by Alice Coltrane’s ever evolving cascade-like flow of acoustic sound. Just as last time, former Smashing Pumpkins-member Melissa Auf Der Maur is very much involved in the concept development. Malmö Live is producing the event, which is part of the (PAUS)-series. More artists will be added to the line-up before the festival.
